Visitors to Membury Primary School were left in no doubt what the Romans did for them last week.

The pupils have been learning all about the ancient empire as part of their history studies and as a finale to the project they welcomed ‘friends and countrymen’ to a special Roman forum.

Visitors from as far afield as ‘Ascanmynster’ were entertained to a display of authentic, functioning models of Roman weaponry, such as catapults, crossbows and trebuchets.

The ‘centurions’ supervised an impressive firing display, and the footsoldiers displayed the ‘tortoise’ formation with their shields.

There was an array of gods, emperors, gladiators and slaves, as the pupils had dressed up for the occasion – sadly without the Mediterranean weather top go with the outifits.

They displayed their work on Roman mosaics, engineering, food and heritage, and involved everyone in a themed treasure hunt which tested the knowledge of all present on Roman history.
