Lyme Regis Gig Club will take on local firefighters, coastguards and the lifeboat crew

One of the major Lyme Regis Lifeboat Week events postponed because of the weather has been re-scheduled for this Bank Holiday Monday.

The gig race involving the lifeboat crew, coastguards, firefighters and Lyme Regis Gig Club is planned for noon.

Four gigs with a crew of six rowers and a cox will be competing for the first time for a special trophy sponsored by the Harbour Inn.

One of the organisers, David Clayton, said: “We have re-arranged the event at short notice and it should be quite a spectacle. One of the best places to watch will be from the pebble beach in front of Marine Parade.

“All the emergency services crews had been training hard for the lifeboat week event and were disappointed when it had to be called off.

“We are delighted, weather permitting, to get a second chance, and hope to make the event one of the regulars in Lifeboat Week.”

And favourites to win ?

“All I will say is that the coastguards have been training very hard, “ added David.
