Doris Smith celebrates her 100th birthday at a Seaton residential home

A CARD from the Queen crowned a retired Seaton hairdresser’s 100th birthday celebrations.

It took pride of place at a party to mark Doris Smith’s special day at the town’s Dove Court residential home.

Born on the Isle of Wight, Mrs Smith moved to Seaton with her husband, Len, and set up her salon on first floor premises in Queen Street. Mr Smith, who died around 20 years ago, ran the tobacconists shop below.

The couple lived at Seaton Down Road for many years and were very well known in the town. For many years after her husband’s death Mrs Smith lived at the town’s Abbeyfield House until it closed.

Her close friend Molly Somers said Mrs Smith was currently not in the best of health but had appreciated the cards and messages on her special day.

“She was a very well known hairdresser in the town and a very popular lady,” she said.
