STUDENTS attending secondary schools in Axminster and Lyme Regis have got the day off as teachers stage a 24-hour strike.

The industrial action, the first staged by members of the National Union of Teachers for 21 years, has closed more than 80 schools across Devon and caused disruption to hundreds of others.

Teachers are unhappy with a three-year pay deal, including 2.45 per cent from September and rises of 2.3 per cent in subsequent years. They say the pay rise proposal is not enough to cover inflation.
