1st Honiton Scouts join forces with the police to confront speeding drivers.

Speeding drivers were confronted by more than the police in Honiton last week.

Delivering a strong message to drivers who flout the law were young members of the 1st Honiton Scout Group.

The scouts teamed up with neighbourhood beat manager PC Gemma Siszcuk and Police Community Support Officer Darren England to help conduct speed checks in Battishorne Way.

They were shown how the speed detection devices are calibrated and how officers use them in the field to detect motorists flouting the rules.

The scouts were able to carry out their own checks and recorded the speeds motorists were travelling.

They also were given the opportunity to question the speeding drivers about why they were travelling so fast and how they would feel if they hit someone. This was just one of the many events the scouts were taking part in as part of Scout Community Week.

This particular activity was to help the scouts get their police community badge.

Matthew Jones, 13, who has been a member of the scouts for seven years, said: “I am enjoying it.

“I feel I am really helping the community.

“I have learnt quite a bit.”

Speed checks were conducted in Dowell Street – 188 vehicles were monitored with 19 found travelling over 30mph.

As a result, two drivers, who were travelling at 40mph and 46mph, will receive warning letters.

In Battishorne Way, five vehicles were found travelling between 35 and 39mph and were stopped and spoken to.
