Carnival queen, princess and prince contest gets under way

Seaton Carnival Committee has begun the search for a royal party to lead the town’s 2015 illuminated procession.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the glittering parade – the highlight of a week of summer fun in the resort.

Traditionally, Seaton Carnival is the first of the year on the East Devon Carnival Circuit. Around 50 colourful floats of all types and sizes, along with majorette troupes and walking entries, dressed in fantastic costumes, set off from the Esplanade to travel the procession route.

The parade winds its way around the town centre before finally making its way down Fore Street in a blaze of colour and lights. And taking pride of place at its head is the royal float with Seaton Carnival Queen and her attendants on board.

Besides attending Seaton’s own carnival, the royal tableau also visits the other carnivals on the East Devon Circuit – Colyton, Axminster, Sidmouth, Exmouth, Ottery St Mary and Honiton.

Now Seaton Carnival Committee is inviting young people, aged over nine, to write and tell them why they would like to be this year’s Carnival Queen and Princess or Prince. Letters should be sent to Mrs A Broom, 57 Riverdale Close, Seaton, Devon EX12 2TN or telephone 01297 24982 for more details.

All costumes are provided, as is transport to and from the other carnivals.

The winners should be available for the following dates: Sunday, August 30, when the crowning ceremony takes place, and the following Saturdays: September 5, 12, 19 and 26 and October 10, 24 and 31.

The competition will run until Monday, May 25.
