Queen and princesses selected to lead the golden jubilee procession

Seaton Carnival Committee has chosen its royal party for this year’s 50th anniversary parade.

Jenny Webber will lead the grand illuminated procession as queen and she will be attended by two princesses - Haley Jones and Erin Ellis.

The carnival royalty will be officially crowned at 6pm on Sunday, August 30, in the town hall.

The ceremony will be conducted by gardener, writer and broadcaster Anne Swithinbank. Tea and refreshments will be available. The crowning will be followed by Songs of Praise.

The carnival royalty will undertake a week of carnival events before taking part in the golden jubilee procession, which, this year, will take place on Saturday, September 5.

Seaton Carnival is the first of the year on the East Devon carnival circuit. Around 50 colourful floats of all types and sizes, along with majorette troupes and walking entries, dressed in fantastic costumes, set off from the Esplanade to travel the procession route.

The parade winds its way around the town centre before finally making its way down Fore Street in a blaze of colour and lights.

Besides attending Seaton’s own carnival, the royal tableau also visits the other carnivals on the circuit – Colyton, Axminster, Sidmouth, Exmouth, Ottery St Mary and Honiton.

Meanwhile, the committee is also organising a summer skittles competition. If anyone is interested in entering a team to take part, they should telephone Jenni on 01297 560668.

The deadline for entries is July 1.
