Major refurbishment and improvements to turn Seaton Library into one of Devon's flagship 21st Century libraries will require it to close between June 7 and July 8.

During that period alternative arrangements are being put in place by Devon County Council to minimise any inconvenience.

Axminster library will open an extra day a week, on Wednesdays, between 9:30am and 5pm, in addition to its normal opening hours. Library users will be able to borrow extra items prior to closure to tide them over. Otherwise, people are welcome to use the services at neighbouring libraries in Sidmouth, Honiton and Axminster.

The refurbishment is part of a 650,000 programme of work across six Devon libraries.

The new-look Seaton library will have a more adaptable layout so that the space can be used for a wider variety of purposes. It will include new self-service kiosks; computers with internet access; free wi-fi; a new space for young people, an improved childrens library; a quiet study area; and comfy seating.

Preliminary designs went on public display at the library last month, while the Council also asked for people's opinions on extending the library's opening times. Opening times for the refurbished library have not yet been confirmed, but could include shorter lunchtime closures.

The Council's Cabinet Member responsible for the county's libraries, Cllr Stuart Barker said:

"Our refurbishment programme will give all the libraries involved fresh new brighter looks and feel, and will broaden their appeal and use by their local communities. They will be better equipped to deal with the bigger choice of books and other services to meet people's needs.

"By improving the layouts and introducing self service kiosks, our library staff will be able to spend time helping people with their enquiries and choices .

"The overall aim is to make sure our libraries attract a much wider range of people of all ages - particularly teenagers who often feel that libraries have nothing to offer them.

"Where we have invested already in our libraries and now provide a wider range of services of interest to local people, library membership figures have risen."

Local County Councillor for Seaton, Councillor Jim Knight, said:

"I would like to thank all the staff at our Seaton Library for the hard work and dedication in the daily running of the establishment and the courteous and cheerful manner they show to all that enter our library.

"I am delighted that Seaton library is to receive such a good refurbishment and am sure that it will attract more users with its wider range of services.

"This is the first of many things that will bring Seaton town centre alive again and will vastly improve the poor facilities that Seaton has today.
