A musical trip back to the 1960s for Seaton Memory Cafe users

Hits of the 1960s struck a chord for users of the Seaton Memory Café as they enjoyed a reminiscence event organised by Age UK Devon.

It was a trip down memory lane as they sang along to 60s music during a ride to Colyton and back on the Seaton Tramway, and then the more energetic members of the group hit the dancefloor to live rock ‘n’ roll and Twist music at the Tramway tea room.

Yvonne Addington, the Memory Cafe’s chairperson and a Dementia Champion, explained that music and dance are highly beneficial for people with dementia. “Involving people with dementia and their carers in interactive sing-song sessions boosts their confidence, self-esteem and quality of life,” she said.

“Even if people with dementia can’t talk, they may be able to sing, whistle, clap or tap their feet. It helps them and their carers to feel that life is worthwhile.”

She thanked Trish Warren from Age UK Devon for organising the trip.
