Seaton's Sophie is Young Councillor of the Year

SEATON town councillor Sophie O'Connell has won the award for Devon Young Councillor of the Year.

SEATON town councillor Sophie O'Connell has won the award for Devon Young Councillor of the Year.The 21-year-old, who has been a councillor since May last year, was recognised for her work with young people in Seaton after the local youth club closed. Particular attention was given to her 'Grove Zero' project - a zero alcohol nightclub for 13 to 16 year-olds, which regularly attracts more than 200 youngsters a week.Presented with her award by the Deputy Lord-Lieutenant of Devon, Sir Jon Cave, Sophie said it was nice to have her work recognised."It was a bit of a surprise," she said. "I knew I was put forward - and it was just nice to be shortlisted. "I didn't expect to get it. "It was like waiting for exam results!"My mum's ecstatic and it's been like a prom night with her taking lots of photos. "I didn't do the Grove Zero work for an award.
