SEATON Town Councillors are predominantly in favour of a unitary structure for Devon.

During the monthly council meeting on Monday, December 21, only Cllr John Meakin said he was in favour of the status quo.

Members were asked to consider whether the council submits a view on unitary structure for Devon to the Boundary Committee - an independent body set up by the UK Parliament, which advised the Government on local authority bids for unitary status.

The Committee is suggesting either a single unitary council for the whole of the current Devon County Council area, excluding Plymouth and Torbay; or a Greater Exeter and Exmouth unitary authority, and a further unitary authority covering the remainder of Devon, with no changes to Plymouth and Torbay.

East Devon District Council is fighting a possible change and argues it will lead to a system that is remote from most people.
