A budding young sportsman from Honiton Community College is celebrating after being selected to play for the Devon under-15s Rugby Union squad – a year earlier than expected.
It has been a busy time for Year 9 student Charlie Wright who has also been invited to join the Exeter Chiefs’ under-15s academy, which is a training squad.
He recently impressed coaches following a rugby trial at Blundell’s School and was selected out of 150 boys.
“I was quite surprised at being selected as I was a year younger, but very happy because I was selected out of 150 boys from the first trial and approximately 75 at the second trial - only 35 were picked in the Devon squad,” says Charlie.
Out of the 35 picked for the Devon team, only 15 were invited to join the Exeter Chiefs’ training squad.
During the school year Charlie has captained his Year 9 school team, represented the year above in two rugby fixtures and regularly trained with the under-16s at Honiton Rugby Club, which has helped him to develop his skills.
Speaking about his goals for the future, he said: “I just want to keep improving through hard work and ultimately would love to play professionally for Exeter Chiefs.”
