The Senior Council for Honiton joins Fair Care campaign.

The Senior Council for Honiton has joined a campaign calling for better care for the elderly.

It has joined the Fair Care campaign and members attended the National Pensioners’ Convention last week to listen to the general secretary, Dot Gibson, who spoke of the importance of fair care and the “new code”.

The campaign calls for the creation of a national care service to run alongside the NHS, which would be funded through taxation, based on medical and personal needs.

The senior council has also signed up to a national dignity code to uphold the rights of the elderly receiving care at home or in residential homes and will be promoting this in the town.

Chairman Vic Bowsher said: “We are pleased to support the fair care campaign because we believe older people need a new deal after the mounting evidence of poor care of older people as described in many official reports.

“We are also taking action to promote the campaign locally and to uphold ‘best practice’ and the dignity code in Honiton and district.

“We want to work constructively with those involved in care services and with other organisations like Age UK and the National Pensioners Convention to which we are signed up.”

Chairman Vic Bowsher and committee member Evelyn Assey will act as champions to promote the code.

The senior council will be promoting the campaign and have a number of events planned over the coming months.
