Resort gears up for the annual town criers’ contest

A major shouting match is set to take place in the centre of Seaton on Saturday (August 8).

The resort’s champion town crier David Craner will be welcoming colleagues from across the country for the annual crying contest.

All the contestant are members of the Ancient and Honourable Guild of Town Criers (AHGTC) and they will parade through the town in their traditional outfits from 10.45am.

At 11am the competition kicks off with 15 criers competing against each other in Seaton Town Square. They will ‘cry’ again at 2pm.

This year well-known criers who have won many contests will be appearing. The town criers will each prepare two cries - the first being their ‘home’ cry - promoting the highlights of their home town to the people of Seaton - and a second ‘themed’ cry which can include anything from a place of interest to a more popular current theme. All the cries start with the traditional ‘Oyez Oyez Oyez’ and end with ‘God Save the Queen!
