DANGEROUS drivers are going to cause a serious accident on a busy stretch of road near a school in Sidmouth, a concerned grandmother has warned.

Carol Vincent, 66, walks her eight-year-old granddaughter to St Nicks everyday and she has got so annoyed with drivers failing to stop at the zebra crossing next to the Jet Garage that she actually ran after one man and gave him a piece of her mind.

She said: "It is not all old people but the majority that don't stop for us are over a certain age.

"People can see we are about to walk over the road but then continue on anyway.

"It happens on average about once a week and I've got to the stage now where I wait even after a car has stopped in case it decides to go.

"I want drivers to realise how serious it is not to stop. They need to think about children when they are near a crossing, especially one that is so close to a school."

Carol, who often takes her two-year-old granddaughter in a pushchair on the school walk, feels there is a lack of respect for pedestrians.

She added: "Children are expected to understand road safety but car drivers don't show the same respect by waiting at the kerb side.

"One man actually pulled up to the crossing and then accelerated. I was so furious-it could've been a serious accident. I ran after him and asked him why he did that. He said he didn't know what to do.

"I don't know how an accident hasn't happened yet. It's just a matter of time."

A police spokesman said: "According to the Highway Code, motorists must give way when someone has moved onto a crossing. However pedestrians should remain on the kerb side for safety reasons until the approaching vehicles have stopped.

"It is an offence to fail to give way and stop as soon as someone has stepped on to the crossing.
