Recently, urged by Action Aid, I wrote to Sir Terry Leahy, Tesco's Chief Executive, to urge him to pay Tesco's suppliers fairly. The example given by Action Aid was of a woman apple-picker in South Africa being paid only 38p per hour and struggling to feed her family, sometimes having only bread to eat. If her pay were to be increased just a little, she could feed her family properly. Her wages then would be just under 100 per month. The "Every Little Helps" that Tesco emblazon at every opportunity is denied to suppliers such as these apple-pickers. With half-yearly profits of 1.45 billion, surely Tesco can pay suppliers properly? My second comment is that, with so many Tesco's around, it would be good to have the choice of something different in Seaton. Finally, I am grateful that we have, in Seaton, a group of intelligent and capable people who, for very many months, have worked hard to ensure that Seaton gets the best regeneration deal that can be obtained. They have really done their homework and are keeping up-to-date as events unfold.Michael BayleyGully ShootColyford
