Shelves are almost empty say organisers as they launch a desperate appeal for more donations

Seaton Foodbank has launched a crisis appeal to help meet soaring demand.

Organisers say that in the past four weeks a record number of people have called for their help and they desperately need more donations.

A spokesman tod The Herald: “The shelves are almost completely empty, as volunteers have had the busiest month since the scheme opened almost two years ago.

“Foodbank in Seaton has proved over 1,000 meals to families in need in the Seaton area in just the last four weeks.

“The unprecedented demand, together with a drop in donations, have lead to the current crisis, with significant amounts of food having to be bought by the management team each week to meet the on –going demand.

“Although the Food bank does have limited finances these are only usually used in an emergency to top-up gaps in the store, not to refill whole empty shelves which is the case at the moment.

“The Food bank in Seaton are very grateful for the on-going support of the community but they are in immediate need of the items in order for the vital service to continue.”

A wide range of non perishable items are desperately needed at collection points in the large Co-op and Tesco. Donations can also be made at any of the churches in Seaton, Axmouth and Beer and also at the Seaton Town Hall.

Items include:

Cereals, baked beans, rice pudding (tinned), sponge pudding (tinned), tomatoes (tinned), tinned meat, tinned vegetables, tinned fish, tinned soup, tinned fruit, tinned pulses, tea bags (Pkts of 40), instant coffee? milk UHT (long life) or powdered, fruit juice (carton - long life), sugar (500g), pasta/rice (1kg), instant mashed potato, pudding (longlife or tinned), instant custard (pkts), pasta sauce, biscuits and snack bars, squash/cordials, toilet rolls, female sanitary products.
