John Marriage will explain to U3A members how beautiful images are created through electronic pulses.
John Marriage, local expert on all things photographic and scientific, will combine his enthusiasms in an illustrated talk to the Heritage Coast U3A on Wednesday, June 14.
He has researched the history of ‘Lichtenberg figures’ – the strange, beautiful, almost organic shapes formed when a pulse of high-voltage electricity passes over the surface of an insulator.
These were first described by Georg Christoph Lichtenberg in the 18th Century, and first photographed in the 19th by Étienne Leopold Trouvelot.
Their work produced little important scientific outcome, but the visual force of their images has continued to attract artists. John’s talk is illustrated by examples of their work, and of Lichtenberg figures he has himself created.
The talk is at 11am in Woodmead Halls, Lyme Regis, with coffee or tea available from 10am.
Entrance is free to U3A members - non-members are encouraged to make a £2 donation towards the talk.
