AS Post Office Limited axed 37 branches across Devon yesterday (Tuesday), Offwell was given a stay of execution. The proposed closure of the sub-post office, which serves six parishes, has been put on hold while a "further review" is carried out.A once-and-for-all decision is expected in the near future.Brab Hallowes, a member of Offwell Rural Services Association, which runs the village post office and shop, said: "It means, in some way, shape or form, they have listened to the arguments we put forward. This is better news than we had in May. At least we are still in there fighting."Mr Hallowes is concerned another post office will be earmarked for closure if Offwell is saved."If we are still fighting, it could mean another community having to fight. It's like Russian roulette," he said.Offwell residents mounted a high profile campaign to save their post office after being shocked to discover it was on a closure list. During a six-week consultation period, they launched a petition, held a public meeting and even marched into Honiton to make their point.
