Wildlife park celebrates Australia Day with a host of bugs, snakes and animals from ‘down under’.
Strewth! Jungle critters were on the loose when Axe Valley Wildlife Park helped local youngsters celebrate Australia Day.
Staff welcomed some 60 pupils from Redstart primary School in Chard for a day of all things Antipodean.
The children were split into two groups - Kangaroos and Koalas – and each was given activities to join in with.
Marie our The children had a talk with the park’s education officer Marie Pulman in an Australian themed room which included fruits and veg, boomerangs, didgeridoos and eucalyptus.
The pupils got to meet some large Australian stick insects and got to meet some sugar gliders - an unusual marsupial from Australia that lives in the park.
They also heard about how the top two most venomous snakes come from Australia and the children got hold a non poisonous snake.
Meanwhile their teachers took part in a bushtucker trial and ate some edible bugs. The children also fed the park’s wallabies and completed an Australian trail looking out for Australian animals around the park.
