Hands on experience at Fairwater Head Hotel in Hawkchurch for some trainee chefs and managers

A group of students travelled to East Devon recently to gain some hands-on experience of the hospitality industry.

The fifth formers from Milton Abbey School, near Blandford, were welcomed to the Fairwater Head Hotel at Hawkchurch by owners Carrie and Adam Southwell.

The youngsters are all enrolled on a hospitality and catering course, and were keen to learn about the day to day running of a hotel.

To help them learn the ropes Mr Southwell, a very experienced hotelier, set them their tasks for the day.

They made beds, learnt about hotel reception and the booking systems, and spent time in the kitchen making bread and soup. After a four hour shift they were very pleased to take a break and share lunch and their culinary creations with the staff.

Mr Southwell said: “There is definitely nothing like hands on experience to demonstrate the hard work and team spirit needed to run a hotel smoothly. The students all excelled and maybe one day we’ll see one of them in our kitchens or working as hotel manager – we all had a great day and we wish them every success for the future.”
