Staff and students at Honiton Community College (HCC) slept rough to raise awareness of homlessness in young people.

The move was part of ‘The Big Sleep Out 2015’, fronted by homelessness charity Trinity.

With no luxury items allowed, students gathered cardboard from various locations around Honiton to use as bedding and brought their own sleeping bags.

With only homemade soup and bread as food and hot drinks available throughout the night, the students braved the elements, tried to find as comfortable a spot as possible and prepared for a tough night’s sleep in the school grounds.

The event was organised by the school’s sixth-form students to raise money for charity Young Devon.

Selena Burroughs, head of sixth form, said: “I am really delighted that the sixth-form students planned and participated in this event and raised over £900 for a worthy local charity.

“Sixth formers are excellent ambassadors for the local community and college. I am extremely proud of their achievements.”
