History ambassadors bury a time capsule at Colyton Grammar School - and mark the spot with a plaque

Students at Colyton Grammar School got out their shovels to help future generations get a handle on the past.

The youngsters buried a time capsule in the quad area of the original school buildings.

They were joined for the ceremony by one of the oldest former students, Geoff Brown, aged 96, who lives at Elmwood Care Home, in Colyford. He studied at Colyton from 1926 to 1933, one of the first to be educated there.

Also attending was former headmaster Ernest Fox, who retired in 1990.

The capsule was organised by the grammar school’s student ‘history ambassadors’ using the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee as inspiration.

The capsule is made from PVC with aluminium ends, and has the date of burial and the name of the school marked on it.

It contains illustrations of what students think represent life in East Devon, a collage of Colyton Grammar School in 2012. A collage of the London 2012 Olympics and a collage depicting the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. There is also an account of a day in the life of a Colyton Grammar School student.

The site is marked with a plaque on the wall above so that its location will be remembered – unlike two other time capsules buried at the school whose locations have been forgotten!

History ambassadors are Milly Gigg and Sally-Ann Macefield (key organisers) and Sarah Bosworth, Alice Chilcott, Libby Norman, Kate Mansfield, Freddie Holley, Jake Hallam, Ed Bithell, Sam Zhang, Chris Wood and Harry Richardson.
