New members welcome.

Parkinson’s sufferers in Honiton are being given a helping hand by a support group based the town.

The Parkinson’s UK Honiton Support Group currently has 22 members but is always on the look out for new people to join.

The group meets at the Turks Head Lodge on the second Friday of every month and is open to anyone suffering from the disease and also those who care for someone with Parkinson’s.

Linda Lyes, the information and support worker for Parkinsons UK in East Devon, said: “Anyone can come along - people with Parkinson’s and carers can come to the support group.

“This support group does need extra support and volunteers to help organise events or anything they can do to help or assist the group.”

She added: “The groups are for people to come along for any support they need.

“They are very good and give people suffering from Parkinson’s and their carers the opportunity to meet like minded people and get together.”

Last week members were joined by Parkinson’s sufferer Jane Rideout, from Honiton, who raised more than 1,000 for Parkinson’s UK after completing a 50-mile walk along the south west coastal path. She spoke to the group about her experiences with the disease.

The group will be holding its next meeting on September 14 where Parkinson’s nurse Ann Gilbert will be attending to explain more about her role. For more information on the Honiton support group call 01404 42040.
