Police urge motorists to prepare for the summer holiday traffic.

MOTORISTS are being urged to prepare for the busiest weekends on Devon’s roads as the school holiday’s get into full swing.

Police are advising motorists to take extra care and conduct responsible driving ahead of the school holiday period, which will see a huge summer influx of tourists to Devon and Cornwall.

The combined counties have 30,000 miles of road network and the population increases to more than six million during the summer.

The region has seen five fatal road traffic collisions this month, including three motorcyclists, and police are urging motorists to drive with care.

Inspector Richard Pryce said: “With an increase in tourists and road traffic to the region during this busy period I would like to stress to drivers and riders that many will be unfamiliar with the roads.

“It is important to apply extra concentration and attention to driving, particularly at junctions where many road traffic collisions occur. Motorists should also reduce distractions whilst driving such as mobile phones, and audio devices. Please take responsibility in this regard and leave a message on your phone whilst driving - don’t be tempted to answer it.”

Inspector Pryce added: “Inappropriate speed is another important factor. We would ask all drivers to observe the speed limit and drive appropriate to the conditions whether it be the volume of traffic or the actual weather conditions at the time. Also, drive with patience, allowing plenty of time for your journey.

“Our road deaths this month have also involved motorcyclists. All riders and should take extra care to concentrate on both their own riding and those motorists around them.

“I would recommend that riders improve their road skills and standard of riding by undertaking rider improvement schemes such as Bike-safe or the charitable IAM or ROSPA schemes.”
