‘No alternative’ but to close community college, says principal.
HONITON Community College will be closing its doors after staff voted to take part in a one day strike against changes to pensions.
The college will be closed on Wednesday, November 30, when teachers and associate staff in the NASUWT, NUT, UNISON, NAHT AND GMB go on strike.
A statement from Principal Glenn Smith on the college’s website said: “As the vast majority of teachers and associate staff at Honiton Community College have collectively voted to take action, I have been left with no alternative but to close the college for the day of action.
“We did spend some considerable time looking at whether we could remain open and provide a limited service, but it would not have been possible to provide a worthwhile and safe educational experience for students given the very significant numbers of teachers on strike.
“I can only speak for staff at Honiton Community College in saying the vast majority have taken this action with great reluctance.
“We all share the same ardent hope that there will be a resolution to this issue which will avoid any further disruption to the education of our students.”
