TESCO in Axminster is one step close to being extended after town councillors recommended to approve the plan.
But councillors recognised that expansion works would inconvenience residents in the vicinity, such as Vale Lane.
The town council suggested a host of conditions be attached to the application during the monthly meeting on Monday (March 8).
Cllr Chris Scott said: "I think anybody who uses the existing store will accept that it's too small and we are in a position where we can expand it with what you might call minimal intrusion."
He voiced concern for residents in Vale Lane and Shank Park, warning they could suffer from excess noise while work was being done.
He added: "I think whatever can be done should be done to protect them from this work. I'm assuming that in the end we will be supporting the application but with a list of conditions."
