TESCO has submitted a planning application to extend its store in Axminster.

The supermarket giant's say the move comes from shoppers' requests for an increased range of products and improved product availability at the store.

The proposed extension would be from 18,357 ft2 to 30,353ft2, and is expected to include enhanced shopping facilities, a further 50 jobs, and another 52 car park spaces.

A 350,000 footbridge, connecting the upper level of the proposed new store and car park to the existing footpath and town centre, has been put forward in the design.

Tesco corporate affairs manager Juliette Bishop said: "Following feedback from the public consultation held last year we have been revising our proposals for the extension to the store and we are delighted to have been able to incorporate the footbridge into the design."

The store's design is said to incorporate a range of energy-saving features, including a Combined Heat Power unit - to provide heating and electricity. Extensive glazing would be fitted at the front to maximise natural light.
