Weeding out some computer help could make a big difference.

While the search for land suitable for allotments continues in Honiton, pensioners had a pressing question to ask a local councillor last week - how can we register with Landshare.net when we don’t use computers?

Green Party town councillor Sharon Pavey replied: “Speak to me and I’ll do it for you.”

She was guest speaker at a meeting of the Senior Council for Honiton, held in the Methodist Church on Wednesday morning.

After explaining the aims of Transition Town Honiton, a pensioner told Sharon that she could no longer manage her garden and that she would be happy for someone else to grow vegetables in it.

When the pensioner was advised to register with the website, she said: “That is no good - I don’t use a computer.”

Those present at the meeting felt land sharing could be a step forward for gardeners in Honiton.

And the mayor, Councillor Vernon Whitlock, agreed.

Retired pub landlady Di Hawkins thought it could be one solution to the town’s lack of allotments “if it was run by the town council”.

She added: “That’s what they are there for.”
