Honiton Community College welcomes a new litter of piglets.
The pitter patter of tiny trotters can once again be heard at Honiton Community College with the arrival of a new litter of piglets.
Students and staff at the college will be taking care of the seven British lop piglets, who are nine-weeks-old.
They will be shown by the students at the Devon County Show in May.
“The students will be trained to look after the piglets and shown how to display them in the lead up to the show. They will also find out about the history of the British lop and about keeping pigs and the reasons for looking after rare breeds,” says Gary Wills, the college’s director of finance. “The students are going to learn so much.”
British lops are one of the rarest breeds in the country.
The college also has two Tamworth pigs to keep the piglets company in their enclosure, which is located in the college’s woodland area used for forest school and other outdoor activities.
This is the second litter of piglets to be brought to the college. Their mother Princess was a huge hit with students and staff as were her previous litter of 10 piglets.
A farming expert will be coming to talk to the students about pig farming as they hone their handling skills ready for the big county show.
