IN the early 1970s someone, somewhere in Honiton, was knitting perfectly crafted replicas of The Wombles.Knitted boiled egg warmers, depicting rabbits, were also being produced.But who knitted them?The Herald has a stunning replica of Uncle Bulgaria and an egg warmer to offer Allhallows Museum, along with commis-sioned pieces of Honiton Pottery.Who was responsible for the knitting?The pieces were possibly ordered through a former craft shop, located close to the former Co-op furniture store, next to or part of what is now Lace Walk.This newspaper has a name in mind, Mrs Burt, but believes she is now dead.It is recalled that orders for The Wombles were in such demand that those who received them were extremely lucky.If you can help, call Belinda Bennett on (01392) 888488, or (01404) 46472 on Wednesday or Thursday morning.
