Three face a long swim home when the wind drops a mile off Charmouth

Lyme Regis lifeboat launched yesterday (Wednesday, August 8) following a report of three kite surfers stranded after the wind dropped.

The volunteer crew was asked to assist the coastguard with recovering the stranded trio.

The men, all local and regular kite surfers, were an estimated mile from Charmouth when recovered by the lifeboat.

A member of the public called the coastguard. He was watching the kite surfers and noticed that when the wind suddenly dropped they were left floating in the water.

The lifeboat launched at 5pm and the crew was quickly on scene to recover the three people.

One of the kite surfers said: “Thanks to the lifeboat crew for picking us up, it would have been a very long swim to the shore otherwise!” The kite surfers did not wish to be named.

It was the first shout for Dave Holland, one of the new volunteer crew members.

He said: “It was great to be on the lifeboat and put some of the training to good use.”

Yesterday evening the lifeboat and crew attended an RNLI fundraising event at Seatown where crowds watched them training with the Rescue 187 coastguard helicopter.
