THREE men have been arrested on suspicion of theft following a police operation in Axminster.

THREE men have been arrested on suspicion of theft following a police operation in Axminster.

The men were found in poessession of a quantity of four-wheel drive tyres and some scrap metal, believed to have been stolen. They have been bailed pending further enquiries.

The tyres were Cometus and Runway brands, and police are asking people to check their garages and sheds to check no items have been taken.

The Axminster Neighbourhood Police Team ran Operation Shogun in conjunction with Avon and Somerset and Dorset constabularies on May 17 and 18. Over 20 officers from various deparments took part.

During the operation, a 19-year-old local man was also cautioned for a drugs-related offence; two vehicles were seized and their drivers reported for motoring offences, and a number of other minor motoring offences were dealt with by fixed penalty notices or words of advice.

Pc Kevin Bennett said: "The latest operation is one of a series, with more planned throughout the year. They have assisted in reducing crime with burglaries in the Axminster and surrounding area down by over a third in comparison to the same period last year."
