A few weeks ago, you reported on fears that had been raised that Seaton Town Council was planning to close Seaton Tourist Information Centre. In that report, the town clerk stated that there were no plans to close the centre as it was an asset to the town and tourism. He went on to say, however, that he had been given authority to bring about best value to the council tax payers of Seaton to make the centre more accountable and efficient.Having now seen the town council's accounts for 2008/9 and the budget for 2009/10, it is plain to see that the town council does, indeed, seek to reduce the service offered by the TIC manager and her staff. We, the taxpayers of Seaton, are contributing only 10,000 this financial year out of an overall town council budget of 184,000. If the council wants to bring about "best value", perhaps it should look to other areas of the budget and see how the council can be made more "accountable and efficient''.The service offered by Seaton TIC staff is superb. Far from reducing their budget, in these times of economic difficulties, it would seem to make sense to maintain expenditure to ensure continuation of a service that plays such an important part in promoting our town to encourage people to visit and spend. To cut this service is simply madness. Come clean, Seaton Town Council, and tell us what your plans really are.J CooperManor Road Seaton
