Working fewer hours for the same momey is a big hit at an Axminster company - for bosses as well as employees

Working fewer hours with no drop in wages has proved a big hit at an Axminster company – for management as well as staff.

Two months ago Axminster Tool Centre, which employs 250 staff, embraced new ways of working in order to ensure firm foundations were in place for continuing success.

Among the initiatives instigated for all employees were the reduction of the working week with no loss of pay, the abolition of the clocking-in system, performance related bonuses, together with improvements to working conditions and benefits.

Now the company has seen a fantastic result with October sales exceeding all previous months in its 40 year history of trading.

A spokesperson said: “The staff have really embraced the new ways of working which is all about trust, commitment and the desire to succeed as an individual, a team and as a whole.

“The October figures say it all and will ensure the company can continue to move forward with its future investment plans.”

As a thank-you to all staff, a free lunch was provided by the company’s canteen last week.

Meanwhile the firm says it will continue to implement its long term objectives and is currently setting up a bank of casual employees to be available on an ad hoc basis during busy times.
