South West Teacher Training (SWTT) offers places to train for secondary school teaching in the shortest subjects Science, Modern Foreign Languages and ICT.
Trainees receive a bursary of �9,000 whilst completing the nine-month course, and can apply for local authority grants to cover tuition fees.
Most people undertaking school-based training are mature entrants to the profession who have decided to change career; the average age at SWTT is 37, but younger applicants are also encouraged to apply.
Applicants must have a degree normally related to the subject they wish to teach and a GCSE or equivalent in English and Maths.
Much of the training is practical, with trainees in the classroom within the first two weeks. Trainees learn completely at the chalk face from experienced practitioners.
Places are filling up quickly for September 2009, but there are still vacancies, particularly in ICT and Modern Foreign Languages.
