Honiton residents can vote yes or no to question over proposed community centre.

POLLING stations have opened in Honiton for a town poll called by the electorate over plans for a £1.75 million community centre.

Four people were eagerly waiting to cast their votes outside the Mackarness Hall as the clock on the nearby parish church struck 4pm.

Those with strong views, for and against, have urged everybody on the electoral roll in Honiton to come out and vote.

There are fears that the eventual turnout will be low, but there was a buzz in High Street in the run-up to the polls opening.

Polling stations are open until 9pm and the result will be published on this website as soon as possible.

Honiton Town Council wants to borrow just under £1 million to meet a shortfall in funding for the community centre and first floor council offices.

The long stay car park, between Lace Walk and the Thelma Hulbert Gallery, has been earmarked for the development for over a decade.

Six electors called a public meeting to decide if a poll should take place.

That poll is under way now. You don’t need a polling card to vote - just turn up at your usual polling station - eirhter the Mackarness Hall, Red Cross Hall or East Devon Business Centre.
