POST Office Limited has selected our post office branch for closure within the next couple of months. We have devoted a lot of time and money developing a viable, community-led facility, now in its fourth year, which is well supported by Offwell residents and by many others from neighbouring villages and even Honiton itself. From the outset, we recognised the need for good free parking and disabled access to the shop, and this has proved very popular. The Post Office maintains that the main Honiton branch, 2.9 miles away, is an adequate alternative facility, yet it does not offer any dedicated parking nor disabled parking spaces - meaning a walk of at least 275 yards from the nearest car park along the main street, often crowded by cars, pedestrians and market stalls. We feel very saddened that our efforts are now threatened by this closure proposal, and we cannot be certain that the shop itself can survive without the added attraction of our own post office. This could have an adverse effect on our ageing population and on all our suppliers, and would be a tragic end for our venture, which was supported by the post office authorities at the outset.OFFWELL Rural Services Association
