Unfortunately I find it hard to sympathise with Mr Hurst regarding his Hackney License Fee (Letters, September 17). As I assume he is self-employed, the £88 fee will be tax deductible, and hence cost approximately £70 in real terms, or £1.35 per week. H

As I assume he is self-employed, the £88 fee will be tax deductible, and hence cost approximately £70 in real terms, or £1.35 per week. However, if this does seem too much, he could always try being a nurse instead. For the pleasure of caring for the sick, dying and wounded, he would only have to pay a mere £76 registration fee!
