Two of Axminster’s longest serving town councillors – both former mayors - have resigned.

Andrew Moulding and Graham Godbeer stood down at the recent meeting, announcing their decision to leave in closed session.

Their resignations follow those recently of two other former mayors – John Jeffery and Mervyn Symes.

This week Cllr Moulding said the reasons for his decision to stand down were ‘confidential’.

In a letter to Mayor Jeremy Walden he wrote: “I herewith resign from Axminster Town Council.

“I will not attend the Annual Parish Meeting and will send a written report as Chairman of the ACE Steering Group, relating to the work on the Axminster Neighbourhood Plan.

“With regard to the Neighbourhood Plan, I now stand down as Chairman of Axminster Community Enterprise, although I will retain my position on the Steering Group as an East Devon District Councillor for the Axminster Town ward. I will complete the work I have been doing with Steve Willey regarding the Neighbourhood Plan website.

“My decision to resign from the Town Council and to stand down from my position as Chairman of ACE is no reflection on the relationship between myself and you as Town Mayor. I consider that you and I have always remained firm friends.

“Similarly, my decision to resign is not founded whatsoever on the work of the Town Council staff, who have always treated me with the utmost respect.”

Cllr Godbeer told The Herald: “I have served on Axminster Town Council for 20 years, bar one month fulfilling various roles, including one term as Town Mayor.

“I have enjoyed the majority of that time. I would like to thank the Clerk and Deputy Town Clerk for their help and dedication to the town and its council.
