Holiday beach cordoned off as bomb disposal team carry out a controlled explosion

A bomb disposal team was called to Charmouth yesterday afternoon (Monday April 14) after an unexploded hand grenade was found on the beach.

Coastguards from Lyme Regis and the resort’s lifeboat crew kept walkers and boats away from the area while the ordnance disposal experts carried out a controlled explosion of the device.

It is understood the rusty grenade, from the Second World War, was found by a visitor who took it to the seafront heritage centre where staff called the emergency services.
