Black ice is making driving very difficult in and around the village.

In one accident, a vehicle hit the village telephone kiosk and almost ended up in the vicarage, an eye witness has reported.

A plumber had a lucky escape when his van slipped down Knapp View. He used his horn to warn other vehicles and escaped shaken but otherwise unharmed.

An Awliscombe farmer has reported that the road through Awliscombe was gritted around half an hour ago.

He urged Devon County Council to make use of contractors during extreme weather conditions - to aid gritting.

"There's so much kit out there that could be used, such as line spreaders," he said.
