Having read your headline "Precept up by 16%", what part of the word "recession" does Honiton Town Council not understand? At a time when everyone is feeling the pinch, and indeed people are losing their jobs, the town council is carrying on as though there is no recession. Members of the local community are not a bottomless bank to be raided by the council as and when it edicts. People should note that all bar one councillor voted for the increase and this should be remembered when the elections come. Like everyone else, Honiton Town Council has a duty to live within its means, at a time when society in general is feeling only the beginning effects of a savage recession. So what does the town council do? It budgets, amongst other items, for £8,000 of expenditure for allotments and flowerbeds. What nonsense! If there is a way to stop the town council passing this increase on, then it should be enacted now. I have a message for Honiton Town Council: Wake up and smell the coffee, and live within your reasonable means! Reduce your over-ambitious spending aims and priorities and behave in a responsible manner for the times we all face. If you can't, or won't, then resign now and go.Andy ElstonBy email
