Volunteers are being called on to organise a team to take part in this summer’s most talked about charity event – the Hospiscare Twilight Walk 2015.

Get the girlfriends together and enjoy a five- or 10-mile stroll along the Exmouth seafront and estuary on Saturday, July 11.

The walk, with its Hawaiian beach party theme, is about getting the girls together for an evening of fun, laughter and memories whilst raising money for Hospiscare.

Already, 350 women have signed up.

Your fundraising will help local people like retired farmer Brian Godfrey, who has been ill since 2011, initially with prostate cancer and now bone cancer.

Brian’s doctor referred him to Hospiscare when he struggled to cope with the prescribed copious medication.

“There were so many different pills he had to take,” said Jill. “When Angela Phillips, our Hospiscare nurse, arrived, she was like a ray of sunshine when she came into the room. She sat down with us and gave us time to explain all the different medication.

“Angela also organised getting a blue badge for the car and an attendance allowance,” said Jill. “She regularly phones us to check on how we are doing. It’s so wonderful having someone to talk to and it’s so reassuring to know there is someone you can always ring if you have a problem.”

Brian said the information and help Hospiscare provided was extremely helpful. His second cancer diagnosis came as a surprise to the family. “You are busy with your life then BAM! We were so shocked,” said Jill. “Hospiscare is so wonderful, to have nurses to phone and the new centre is great.”

Recently Brian and Jill, with daughter Anne, visited the Kings House Day Hospice during an open day. The family were so impressed that Brian has joined the waiting list to attend.

Jill said: “It’s a wonderful building, beautifully done. Honiton is very, very lucky to have it.”

Brian said: “Jill and Anne always have to accompany me when I go out, they know what to do if anything goes wrong. Kings House will be a safe place for me to go and somewhere I can talk to other people in the same position as me. It will also give Jill a break.”

Instead of receiving presents at his birthday party, Brian asked for donations to Hospiscare and raised £387.
