EAST Devon District Council's waste and recycling contractors, Sita, have had considerable problems accessing a number of areas, particularly those households in rural areas served by roads that have not been gritted.

A number of their vehicles have gone off the road today (Wed) and the Contractors had concerns that accidents could increase if they attempted to access some locations with difficult access.

There are still a few areas from Monday and Tuesday that need to be completed, together with those from today. The contractors will make every effort to clear the backlog if conditions improve before the Christmas break, but there may be some areas that cannot be reached and these will be serviced as soon as possible after the holiday break.

An EDDC spokesman said: "We trust that our customers will understand the situation and will appreciate that none of us would relish a 26 tonne refuse vehicle sliding towards us!
