HONITON residents are rallying to help a homeless gentleman of the road following a call for a night shelter to be established in the town.

HONITON residents are rallying to help a homeless "gentleman of the road" following a call for a night shelter to be established in the town.

Former three times mayor of Honiton Joanna Bull, who made the call on the front page of last week's Midweek Herald, says she has been heartened by the response so far.

Just hours after the story was published, the homeless man was given two bags of shopping by well-wishers.

Mrs Bull says the man told her that he would be willing to use any facilities offered to him, but pointed out he will be moving on in a few days' time.

"We still need a night shelter," said Mrs Bull. "We have other homeless people in Honiton living on the streets. "They need somewhere to go when it is cold or raining."

A Dunkeswell resident is the first to offer to be a volunteer at the shelter.

If you want to help or can provide town centre premises or a caravan, call Herald editor Belinda Bennett on (01392) 888488.
