AN East Devon resident received an unwelcome Christmas present this month - in the form of an £80 Fixed Penalty Notice. And the on-the-spot fines look set to continue in the New Year as EDDC gets tough on fly-tippers.
The woman, from Sidmouth, had been spotted fly-tipping a mattress in the Bowd lay-by and was later visited by members of REACT (East Devon District Council's Respond, Enforce And Clean Team). She admitted the offence and was given the opportunity to avoid going to Court by accepting an £80 Fixed Penalty Notice for littering.
Until now, REACT have been educating the public whenever possible if offences have been observed. However, they are now taking a tougher stance and will begin to issue Fixed Penalty Notices for a number of offences, including littering.
So in the New Year please remember to bin your litter and cigarette ends and dispose of larger items responsibly, or face the possibility of parting with £80 - or a maximum of £50,000 on court conviction!
