A care assistant with a violent streak has been jailed for smashing a glass over a man's head in an East Devon nightclub.Exeter Crown Court heard 30-year-old Ceri Freeman was "seriously under the influence of drink" when she swung the glass in an over arm bowling action into the face of Jamie Rudling. The glass shattered on impact, causing numerous cuts to the victim's face and eyeball. Mercifully, he was not seriously injured but, in a victim impact statement, Mr Rudling said at the time he feared an artery could have been severed and he could have been blinded.Prosecutor Alan Allsop said the victim and the defendant had been in a relationship but on the night of the glassing they were out in separate groups and met in The Grove at Seaton. It was there Freeman lashed out with the glass and when door staff restrained her she threatened them with violence. The court heard Freeman had previous convictions for being drunk and disorderly, assault on police and battery. On the last occasion she was given a suspended sentence but, after repeated breaches of that order, she was jailed for 12 weeks. That was imposed for an assault on a paramedic who had gone to help her when she was drunk.Freeman herself admitted on the night of this attack she was drunk on a level of eight on a scale of one to 10.Mitigating Nigel Wraith said it was an emotional time for Freeman and even as she was being taken away in the police car she apologised for what she had done. There had only been one blow and it was fortunate indeed the injuries were not more serious.Freeman, of Fore Street, Seaton, pleaded guilty to assaulting Mr Rudling causing him actual bodily harm.
