Students help “deliver sustainable livelihoods” for producers in the developing world

BUSINESS students at Woodroffe School are planning a series of events to mark Fairtrade Fortnight.

They want to promote awareness of the movement and raise money to help fund it.

To kick-start the Fairtrade fortnight – which begins on Friday and runs until March 13 - they will be teaching year 7 and 8 students about the cause and how they help less developed countries.

As part of this, the students will be adding their own designs to fabric bunting with bright paints and craft materials, which will then be used as decoration in other Fairtrade events.

For the adults, they have arranged a Fairtrade wine tasting evening which will take place at the school on March 11, when guests will have the opportunity to try different Fairtrade wines and nibbles sponsored by The Co-operative.

There will also be a tea and coffee morning at The Marine Theatre on the March 8, when a variety of Fairtrade products can be tried.

* The Fairtrade foundation was established in 1992 by a variety of organisations such as Oxfam and Christian Aid and has helped around 7.5 million people in the developing world. Fairtrade continues to work with businesses, community groups and individuals in poorer developed countries, by ‘delivering sustainable livelihoods’ for the people of the working community, such as farmers.
