College e-vote sees 67 per cent give the thumbs up to plans for a community centre in Honiton.

Young people have had their say over plans for the Beehive Community Centre, with 67 per cent of those taking part in an e-vote giving the Honiton Town Council plan the thumbs up.

The vote, at Honiton Community College, followed a series of assemblies organised by the students’ executive council.

Results have been sent to the council and will form part of a wider public consultation.

Councillor Vernon Whitlock, mayor, said: “The school e-vote is a vote for the future.

“We are building a centre not just for today’s residents but also for future generations.”

Glenn Smith, the college’s principal, said: “The college executive team (CET) was very keen to organise the e-vote to gauge support for the proposed community complex. The results clearly show their backing for the project.

“The CET had previously been consulted on the design, after they expressed a desire to be involved.

“I know they are keen to see construction start soon.”

Young people are not eligible to vote in the forthcoming town poll, but they have asked the council to take their views into account.
